The night before my first retreat, surf/yoga in Costa Rica, I tossed and turned with anxiety and trepidation.
I had travelled on my own before, but not like this.
I was worried that my yoga wouldn’t be good enough, that I would be lonely travelling alone, that I wouldn’t be able to surf (I had conflicting visions of drowning vs. gliding gracefully and powerfully to shore).
I was pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, big time.
Now, ten years later, the night before I go on retreat, I still toss and turn, but from excitement about meeting new people, experiencing new things, and feeling fantastic. Feeling like me.
It’s amazing how our fast paced lives can cause us to be disconnected from others and ourselves. Speaking for myself, I never realized how many masks I was actually wearing until I took them off.
Retreats can help you do that. At least, they did for me.

I have become somewhat of a retreat addict! Over the past ten years, I have been on lots of retreats and would have gone on more if I had more cash and more time.
I still love traditional travel – weddings in Mexico, London with friends and family, weekends in Chicago with the girls etc. But, this retreat thing is here to stay.
Gone are the days when I come home from vacation with an extra five pounds and low energy. Fun times (no question….I’m a semi-reformed party gal), but my energy levels would be seriously depleted.
Retreats have the opposite effect, both physically and mentally.
I figure I’ve clocked over 15 hours of online research for each retreat. …maybe more . When you travel solo, you want to make sure it’s safe and that it is a solo friendly environment. Trust me, not every place is

I’m lucky to have had made lasting friendships with people who I feel I have known for years. It’s easy to connect with other people when you connect with yourself. To truly be your authentic self is a liberating feeling in what can at times be a shallow and materialistic world.
When you’re connected to yourself, you’re also able to see things more clearly. I find that I usually take one or two key leanings away with me after each retreat.
